Searching for a patent? The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) website features a patent database containing U.S. patents from 1790 to the present. Pre-1976 patents are available as TIFF images, and post-1976 patents are viewable using browser plug-ins such as QuickTime. You can also search for U.S. trademarks at this site. While the USPTO site covers a long history of U.S. inventions, obtaining a full text document from the site can be time-consuming at best. There are, however, additional databases that offer both U.S. and international patents, often at no charge and in PDF format.
Try these sites:
Google Patents - covers U.S. patents and patent applications; all documents available for download at no charge to the user in PDF format.
FreePatentsOnline - covers U.S. and international patents and patent applications. Most documents are available as PDFs after registering for an account at no charge to the user.
PatentScope - Full-text searching of international and U.S. patent applications published since 1978.
PatentStorm - Full-text U.S. patents and patent applications from the U.S. Patent Office; site provides advanced search capabilities and full image retrieval in PDF format.
Pat2PDF - Having trouble downloading a patent from the USPTO website? Try this site.
