Icebreaker Team Successfully Tests Mars-Prototype Drill in Dry Valleys Feb 01, 2013 10:10:44 PM | Brian Glass
 
The Icebreaker Mars-prototype sample acquisition system, including an automated drill and sample transfer arm, was deployed to University Valley (one of the Dry Valleys of Antarctica) and tested on 22-31 January. All project goals and milestones were met, including integrated remote operations and testing all fault modes and their recoveries at the Mars-analog site. The team returned to McMurdo on 31 January.

Live video sessions from Antarctica to US classrooms are including science briefs by the team (tailored to the age group), Q&A, and the opportunity for students to remotely operate the Icebreaker Mars-prototype drill from their classroom, hands-on.

Upon arriving this week at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, those Icebreaker team members without prior Antarctic experience underwent "Snowcraft I", also called "Happy Camper", a winter survival field training course. While waiting for our drill and instruments to arrive from Christchurch.
