SLSandIDavid Hitt is a senior writer/editor on the strategic communications team for NASA’s Space Launch System, helping to share the story of America’s next-generation heavy-lift rocket for human and scientific exploration beyond Earth’s orbit.

Hitt began working at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in 2002 as a writer for the NASAexplores education website, and later served as the senior writer for the student and educator sections of the nasa.gov website.

A former newspaper editor, Hitt is a native of Huntsville, AL, and holds a bachelors degree in journalism from the University of Mississippi. He is co-author of two books, “Homesteading Space: The Skylab Story,” written with astronauts Owen Garriott and Joe Kerwin, and “Bold They Rise: The Space Shuttle Early Years.” He is a former chair of the National Space Society’s policy formulation subcommittee and serves as a volunteer at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center museum in Huntsville.

Martin Burkey

Martin_BurkeyMartin Burkey is a senior writer/editor employed by ASRC Federal in support of NASA’s Space Launch System. His work most often involves the details of SLS propulsion and vehicle systems engineering and what those capabilities mean for SLS and deep space exploration.

Burkey has worked at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center for 12 years in various roles including media relations, technical writer, executive communications, and strategic communications. He has supported a variety of programs including the Space Shuttle, X-33, X-24 and X-27 projects, the International Space Station, the Ares Project, and SLS.

A former newspaper journalist, Burkey is a native of Greeneville, TN, and holds a bachelor’s of science degree in journalism from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. As the science writer for The Huntsville (AL) Times for 14 years, he covered the Space Shuttle, space station development, numerous scientific and applications payloads, Army aviation, missile and space programs, and national space policy.
