Did you see the special announcement from #TeacherOnBoard Joe Acaba during a downlink on Jan. 19? NASA and Challenger Center are working together to film several of the lessons Christa McAuliffe planned to perform aboard the Challenger space shuttle during the Teacher in Space mission. NASA astronauts Joe Acaba and Ricky Arnold, both former classroom teachers, will film the lessons over the next several months, including effervescence, chromatography, liquids in zero-g, and Newton’s Laws. Guardians of the Galaxy Space Station Challenge

Marvel Entertainment and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space are challenging students to design a microgravity experiment based on the characteristics of popular Marvel comics super heroes — Rocket and Groot. Brainstorm ideas to better understand plant biology or technology development using the microgravity environment of the space station. Two student-submitted concepts for the Guardians of the Galaxy Space Station Challenge will become official space station experiments.

The NASA Office of Education Fellowship Activity funds candidates for graduate research at their respective campuses during the academic year under the guidance of their faculty adviser and a NASA researcher. To be eligible, candidates must be U.S. or naturalized citizens who hold a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field earned before Aug. 31, 2018. Candidates must enroll in a master’s or doctoral degree program no later than Sept. 1, 2018, and intend to pursue a research-based master’s or Ph.D. program in a NASA-relevant field.

NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia is hosting the “RockOn! 2018” workshop June 16-21, 2018, in partnership with the Colorado and Virginia Space Grant Consortia. University and community college faculty and students are invited to the weeklong workshop to learn how to build and launch a scientific experiment into space. Participants at the hands-on workshop will build an experiment that will be launched to an altitude of more than 70 miles. Workshop participants must be U.S. citizens.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is accepting applications from undergraduate and graduate students interested in projects at federal research facilities across the country. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is accepting applications for its 2018 Educational Partnership Program Undergraduate Scholarship Program. It provides scholarships for two years of undergraduate study to students majoring in STEM fields that directly support NOAA’s mission. Participants conduct research at a NOAA facility during two paid summer internships. A stipend and housing allowance is provided. Applicants must be U.S. citizens attending a Minority Serving Institution and must have a minimum 3.2 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

The NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship program is accepting proposals for the 2018-2019 academic year. NASA will award training grants to the respective universities, with the advisor serving as principal investigator. The maximum NESSF award is $45,000 per year.

Cubes in Space™ lets students design and compete to launch an experiment into space. Selected student-designed payload cubes will be launched via a sounding rocket from Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, in late June 2018 or from a high-altitude scientific balloon from NASA’s Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in New Mexico in late August 2018.

Join the Lunar and Planetary Institute for a 10-week program for graduate students in geology, planetary science, planetary astronomy and related programs.   2018 RASC-AL Design Competition

The RASC-AL engineering design competition challenges teams to develop new concepts that leverage innovations to improve our ability to travel between Earth and other destinations. This year’s themes are (1) Reusable Hybrid Propulsion Stage; (2) Artificial Gravity Reusable Crewed Deep Space Transport; (3) Propellant Resupply Capability; and (4) Lunar Polar Sample Return Architecture. Up to 16 teams will be chosen to participate in a competitive design review at the RASC-AL Forum in Florida. Teams with the top two winning papers will be invited to present their design projects to industry experts at a major aerospace conference.

Two student-submitted concepts for the Guardians of the Galaxy Space Station Challenge will become official space station experiments. Who knows? Maybe former classroom teacher and astronaut Ricky Arnold will conduct the experiments during his 2018 mission.

The Virginia Space Grant Consortium is offering undergraduate research scholarships of up to $8,500 to encourage students to conduct research in STEM fields. Participants must take part in an active faculty-mentored research experience that aligns with NASA’s mission. The scholarship will be awarded for the following academic year.

National Science Foundation’s 2017-2018 Community College Innovation Challenge

The National Science Foundation’s Community College Innovation Challenge is seeking teams to propose innovative STEM-based solutions for real-world problems. Teams must include three to five community college students, a faculty mentor and an industry partner. Submissions consist of a written portion and a 90-second video. Finalists will be invited to attend an Innovation Boot Camp, which is a professional development workshop on innovation and entrepreneurship. First- and second-place teams win cash awards.
