Live Video Chat: Graphics and Animation: The Magic of Creating

NASA Explorer Schools invites students in grades 6-12 from across the U.S. and Departments of Defense and State schools to participate in a live video webchat with Zareh Gorjian. Gorjian is the lead animator and software engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory located in Pasadena, Calif. He will be discussing some of the projects he has worked on and how an animation or graphic is put together from start to finish. Gorjian will be able to connect what the students are doing in the classroom with a real-life career. The hourlong live webchat begins at 9 a.m. EST on Nov 23, 2011.

You do not need to be a participant in the NASA Explorer Schools project to participate in the webchat.

Geometry: Space Math Problems — Solar Storms Web Seminar

As part of a series of electronic professional development experiences for educators, the NASA Explorer Schools and Learning Environments and Research Network, or LEARN, projects are hosting a 60-minute live professional development Web seminar for educators on Nov. 29, 2011, at 7 p.m. EST. Solar Storms provides students a unique opportunity to use geometry and trigonometry to analyze real NASA images of a solar tsunami. During this session, participants will preview a video about solar storms. An overview of the problem sets, suggestions for implementation of best practices and some extension activities that may be appropriate for your curriculum will be provided.

Do you know educators who are inspiring tomorrow’s innovation generation? Recognize their achievements by nominating them for the DiscoverE Educator Award. This award honors educators who are working to help students discover engineering.

Teacher nominees must be full-time U.S. or international school-based educators teaching in grades 6-12. Nominees must be nominated by an engineer or engineering student (college or graduate level). The application form for the award includes short questions to be completed by the educator and the engineer/student nominator.

DiscoverE Educator winners will receive cash awards, prizes and media recognition.

Learn about the relationships between air pressure, temperature, volume and cloud formation. The presenter will provide an overview of the necessary conditions for cloud formation and then show how to apply them to making a cloud in a bottle. Information will be provided about an extension activity, the S’COOL Project, which involves student participation in authentic science.

Participate in the ISS National Lab Education Project Workshop

As a key feature of the 2011 NASA Education Stakeholders Summit, the International Space Station National Laboratory Education Project, or ISS NLEP, will be announcing opportunities for new educational activities and partnerships during a workshop scheduled on Friday, Dec. 2, 2011. These opportunities will include a variety of frameworks to execute your ideas, including flying your experiment aboard the space station and using reduced-gravity facilities and ground-based environments using Space Station resources.

The objective of ISS NLEP is to strengthen a link between the unique venue of the space station and science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, education. The objective of the workshop is to bring together researchers, academicians and interested parties for discussions on upcoming opportunities.

Algebraic Equations: Calculator Controlled Robots Web Seminar

As part of a series of electronic professional development experiences, the NASA Explorer Schools project and the National Science Teachers Association are hosting a 90-minute Web seminar on Dec. 5, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. EST. Discover a unique way of integrating robotic technology into your algebra classes. Robotic missions engage students and provide a unique way of bringing to life the concepts you are teaching. Learn to use programmable Texas Instruments, or TI, calculators and Norland Research Robots to solve problems requiring substituting values for variables in formulas.

You do not need to have a Norland Research Robot or programmable TI calculator to participate in this seminar, or know how to program the calculator. This seminar provides an overview of using robotics in algebra so you can make an informed decision about purchasing the robots and other equipment.

YouTube Space Lab Competition

YouTube Space Lab is a worldwide educational initiative that challenges 14-18 year-old students to design a science experiment that can be performed in space. The two winning experiments will be conducted aboard the International Space Station, or ISS, and live streamed on YouTube.

A prestigious panel of scientists, astronauts, and educators, including renowned professor Stephen Hawking, NASA’s Associate Administrator for Human Exploration and Operations William Gerstenmaier, NASA’s Associate Administrator of Education and former Astronaut Leland Melvin, ESA Astronaut Frank De Winne, JAXA Astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and Cirque du Soleil’s founder Guy Laliberté, will judge the entries with input from the YouTube community.

Students in two age categories, 14-16 years old and 17-18 years old, either alone or in groups of up to three, may submit a YouTube video describing their experiment to YouTube.com/SpaceLab.

Submissions close on Dec. 7, 2011.

NASA Accepting Applications for Future Astronauts

Do you dream of flying in space? Now is your chance. NASA is accepting applications for the agency’s next class for the Astronaut Candidate Program.

Qualified individuals can submit their applications through the federal government’s USAJobs.gov website. Those selected will be among the first to pioneer a new generation of commercial launch vehicles and travel aboard a new heavy-lift rocket to distant destinations in deep space.

Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in engineering, science or mathematics and three years of relevant professional experience. Successful applicants frequently have significant qualifications in engineering or science; or extensive experience flying high-performance jet aircraft. Educators teaching kindergarten through 12th grade with these minimum degree requirements also are encouraged to apply.

NASA will accept applications through Jan. 27, 2012. After applicant interviews and evaluations, the agency expects to announce the final selections in 2013. Training will begin that summer.

Host a Real Time Conversation With Crewmembers Onboard the International Space Station

NASA is now accepting proposals from U.S. schools, museums, science centers and community youth organizations to host an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station, or ARISS, contact between July 15, 2012, and Jan. 15, 2013. To maximize these radio contact opportunities, NASA is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed education plan. Proposals are due Jan. 30, 2012.

Using amateur radio, students can ask astronauts questions about life in space and other space-related topics. Students fully engage in the ARISS contact by helping set up an amateur radio ground station at the school and then using that station to talk directly with a crew member on the International Space Station for approximately 10 minutes. The technology is easier to acquire than ever before. ARISS has a network of mentors to help you obtain the technology required to host this once in a lifetime opportunity for your students.

2012 NASA Student Airborne Research Program

The NASA Airborne Science Program invites highly motivated junior and senior undergraduate and early graduate students to apply for the NASA Student Airborne Research Program, also known as SARP, 2012. The program provides students with hands-on research experience in all aspects of a major scientific campaign, from detailed planning on how to achieve mission objectives to formal presentation of results and conclusions to peers and others. Students will assist in the operation of airborne instruments onboard the NASA P-3 aircraft.

The program takes place in summer 2012. Preparatory information and data analysis will take place at the University of California, Irvine. Instrument and flight preparations, and the research flights themselves, will occur at NASA’s Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility in Palmdale, Calif.

Successful applicants will be awarded a $3,000 stipend and $2,500 meals allowance for eight weeks of participation in the program. Round-trip travel to California, housing and transportation will be provided.

Applications received by Jan. 20, 2012, will be considered for early acceptance. The deadline for all applications is Feb. 10, 2012.

Centennial Challenge: Nano-Satellite Launch Challenge

NASA and the Space Florida Small Satellite Research Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla., are seeking teams to compete in a satellite launch technology demonstration competition with a potential $2-million prize.

During the Nano-Satellite Launch Challenge, teams will compete to launch satellites with a mass of at least 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) into Earth orbit twice within the span of one week. The objective of the competition is to encourage innovations in propulsion and other technologies, as well as operations and management relevant to safe, low-cost, small payload delivery system for frequent access to Earth orbit. Innovations stemming from this challenge will be beneficial to broader applications in future launch systems. They may enhance commercial capability for dedicated launches of small satellites at a cost comparable to secondary payload launches — a potential new market with government, commercial and academic customers.

NASA provides the prize money to the winning team as part of the agency’s Centennial Challenges competitions, which seek unconventional solutions to problems of interest to the agency and the nation. While NASA provides the prize purse, the competitions are managed by nonprofit organizations that cover the cost of operations through commercial or private sponsorships. The competition is planned for summer 2012, and is anticipated to attract hundreds of competitors from industry and academia nationwide.

NASA Kicks Off Application Process for New Astronauts

The public is invited to watch the announcement of NASA’s process for selecting its next class of astronauts. The event starts at 1 p.m. EST on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011, in the Webb auditorium at NASA Headquarters in Washington. NASA Television and the agency’s website will broadcast the event live. NASA Administrator Charles F. Bolden, Assistant Administrator for Human Capital Jeri Buchholz, Flight Crew Operations Director Janet Kavandi and five members of the recently graduated 2009 astronaut class will participate in the announcement. They are Serena Aunon, Kjell Lindgren, Kathleen Rubins, Scott Tingle and Mark Vande Hei.

NASA will recruit its next astronaut class through the federal government’s USAJobs.gov website.

The class of 2009 was the first astronaut class to graduate in a new era of space flight following the final mission of the space shuttle. A new fleet of human spacecraft is in development by commercial companies to deliver crews to the International Space Station. NASA also is developing spacecraft to send humans on missions of exploration far away from our planet.

These new astronauts will advance research aboard the space station to benefit life on Earth and develop the knowledge and skills needed for longer flights to explore the solar system.

Global Water Experiment Webcast

Learn how to use an innovative air traffic control simulator to engage your students as they explore the mathematics involved in the role of an air traffic controller. In the three-plane problem featured in this lesson, the challenge is to change routes and speeds to line up the planes safely, with proper spacing, at a given route intersection.

Space Farm 7 Outreach Event

NASA’s Kennedy Space Center is partnering with The Rock Ranch in central Georgia to celebrate 50 years of human space exploration. Educational activities, planetarium shows and astronaut presentations are scheduled for students, teachers and the public. The Rock Ranch will open its corn maze designed in the shape of an astronaut.

NASA educational activities will be held Sept. 23-24, 2011. The event is open to the public. Saturday, Sept. 23 is School Assembly Day. Schools are requested to call 706-647-6374 to register for the activities.

This event is part of the Space Farm 7 outreach project celebrating NASA’s achievements with seven agritourism events taking place throughout the United States. The goal of the project is to educate and inspire one million children.

100 Year Starship Study Public Symposium

NASA’s Ames Research Center in California and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency will host a public symposium for the 100 Year Starship Study. The symposium will take place Sept. 30 – Oct. 2, 2011, in Orlando, Fla. Registration to attend the symposium is free and open to the public.

The 100 Year Starship Study aims to stimulate students, academia, industry, researchers and the public to consider possibilities and issues surrounding long-duration, long-distance spaceflight.

This endeavor will require an understanding of questions such as: how do organizations evolve and maintain focus and momentum for 100 years or more; what models have supported long term technology.

The 100 YSS public symposium will feature presentations of papers and panel discussion in seven relevant tracks related to interstellar travel:

— Time-Distance Solutions — Propulsion, time/space manipulation and/or dilation, near speed of light navigation, faster than light navigation, observations and sensing at near speed of light or faster than light

DEADLINEEXTENDED: 2011 SPHERES Zero Robotics Challenge

The newdeadline for the Zero Robotics registration is Sept. 16, 2011, or when200 teams are reached, whichever is first! The competition will continue onschedule, but you may join even after the Kickoff.

The Kickoff event will be held Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, at 1 p.m. EDT(10 a.m. PDT). Are you not sure if you’re interested? Watch the Kickoff,transmitted LIVE on NASA TV and via webcast (link at http://zerorobotics.mit.edu).The Kickoff will describe this year’s game and tournament structure and willintroduce the online programming environment.

NASA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and MassachusettsInstitute of Technology’s Space Systems Laboratory are offering high schoolstudents the opportunity to design experiments that will be tested in space.

The 2011 Zero Robotics challenge is a continuation and expansion of a science,technology, engineering and mathematics education program usingbowling-ball-sized spherical satellites aboard the International Space Station.

The Synchronized Position Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental Satellites, orSPHERES, are used inside the station to test maneuvers for spacecraftperforming autonomous rendezvous and docking. The three satellites that make upSPHERES fly in formation inside the station’s cabin. Each is self-containedwith power, propulsion, computing and navigation equipment. Test resultssupport satellite servicing, vehicle assembly and spacecraft that fly information.

The SPHERES Zero Robotics Challenge requires high school student teams to writetheir own algorithm to fly the satellites in the station. Teams must registerbefore Sept. 16, 2011, at http://zerorobotics.mit.edu/.

Entries will be evaluated using simulations. Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology in Cambridge, Mass., will host a ground test 2-D competition inOctober. Two elimination rounds in the 3-D online simulation will be held inNovember. The top 27 teams will have their code sent to the station, where anastronaut will program the SPHERES satellites to run their tests.

The Zero Robotics challenge, facilitated by MIT, TopCoder and Aurora FlightSciences, continues the STEM focus of the SPHERES program. The 2011 challengeexpands on a pilot program performed in 2009 and 2010. By making the benefitsand resources of the space program tangible to high school students, ZeroRobotics is designed to inspire future scientists and engineers. Students willhave the opportunity to push their limits and develop skills in STEM. Thisprogram builds critical engineering skills for students such as problemsolving, design thought process, operations training, teamwork and presentationskills.

MIT’s Space Systems Laboratory developed SPHERES in 2006 to provide DARPA(Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), NASA and other researchers with along-term test bed for validating technologies critical to the operation offuture satellites, docking missions and satellite autonomous maneuvers. Thesatellites provide opportunities to test a wide range of hardware and softwareat an affordable cost.

Teaching From Space Office Seeks Educators toExperience Microgravity

TeachingFrom Space, a NASA Education office, in partnership with the Reduced GravityEducation Flight Program announces the opportunity for students and educatorsacross the country to collaborate on an experiment to be tested aboard amicrogravity aircraft. This incredible opportunity is open to any current K-12classroom educator in the United States. Educators must also be U.S. citizens.

The Microgravity Experience begins with students and educators developing andproposing a reduced gravity experiment. Selected educator teams will then beengaged in a suite of activities that include online professional developmenton classroom resources for microgravity, collaboration with a NASA mentor and areduced-gravity flight. With combined input from their students and mentor,educator teams will design and fabricate their experiments to be tested andevaluated aboard an aircraft that flies approximately 30 roller-coaster-likeclimbs and dips to produce periods of micro and hyper gravity, ranging fromzero gravity to 2 g.

Seven teams of four to five educators will be selected from this applicationprocess to travel to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Educatorswill participate in Reduced Gravity Flight Week Feb. 6-11, 2012, and flytheir own experiments aboard NASA’s Reduced Gravity Aircraft (Note: Thisopportunity is contingent upon the NASA Education budget).

Fall 2011 CassiniScientist for a Day

The Cassini Scientist for a Day contest challenges students to become NASAscientists studying Saturn. Participants examine three possible observationstaken by Cassini and choose the one they think will yield the best scientificresults. This choice must then be supported in a 500-word essay. Teamwork isencouraged. Winners will participate in a teleconference with Cassiniscientists.

The contest is open to all students in the United States from grades 5-12,working alone or in groups of up to four students. The essays will be dividedinto three groups: grades 5-6, 7-8 and 9-12. All submissions must be students’original work. Each student can submit one entry.

Deadline for Fall 2011 submissions is noon Pacific time (3 p.m. EDT) on Oct.26, 2011.

2012NASA Lunabotics Mining Competition

NASA ischallenging U.S. and international undergraduate and graduate student teams todesign and build a telerobotic or autonomous excavator, called a lunabot, thatcould be applied to an actual lunar excavation device or payload. The lunabotmust be able to mine and deposit a minimum of 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of lunarsimulant in 10 minutes.

Design teams must include one faculty advisor from a college or university andat least two undergraduate or graduate students. Universities may work incollaboration, and multidisciplinary teams are encouraged.

Selected teams will compete in the Lunabotics Mining Competition at NASA’sKennedy Space Center in Florida on May21-26, 2012. Registration is limited to the first 60 approved teams.Registration is limited to one team per university campus. Internationally,registration is limited to 10 teams per country.

Registration will end when NASA approves60 applications, or on Nov. 30, 2011, whichever occurs first.

2012RASC-AL Competition

NASA and the National Institute of Aerospace announce the 2012 RevolutionaryAerospace Systems Concepts Academic Linkage Competition. RASC-AL is a designproject competition aimed at university-level engineering students.

The RASC-AL contest challenges participants to design projects based on realNASA projects. Participants can choose from four different themes. These designprojects potentially could be implemented by NASA.

Interested teams are requested to submit a notice of intent as soon aspractical, and teams must submit an abstract for their proposed project by Jan. 20, 2012. The RASC-AL SteeringCommittee of NASA and industry experts will evaluate the proposals and selectas many as ten undergraduate and five graduate teams to compete against eachother at a forum in June 2012 in Florida.

The RASC-AL competition is open to full-time undergraduate or graduate studentsmajoring in engineering or science at an accredited university. Universitydesign teams must include one faculty or industry advisor with a universityaffiliation and two or more undergraduate or graduate students. A group ofuniversities may also work in collaboration on a design project entry.Multidisciplinary teams are encouraged.

Solving the Challenges of Space in the RealWorldand InWorld

The RealWorld-InWorld NASA Engineering DesignChallenge encourages students in grades 7-12 to explore and build skillsessential for successful careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematicsthrough two phases of project-based learning and team competition.

RealWorld (Phase 1):Teams of middle- and high-school-aged students with support of theirteachers/coaches/parents work collaboratively as engineers and scientists toexplore and design solutions related to the James Webb Space Telescope andRobonaut 2.

RealWorld Phase begins:September 1, 2011.
RealWorld Phase ends: January 27, 2012. To be considered to move to theInWorld phase, all RealWorld work must be submitted by this deadline.

Recognition: Submitted finalproject solutions will be featured on the RealWorld-InWorld website, and teamswill receive recognition for their work once they complete the RealWorldchallenge and InWorld registration.

InWorld (Phase 2): Participatingcollege students select teams of two to four middle- and high-school-agedstudents who have completed the RealWorld phase to build their InWorld teams.Participation is limited to U.S. citizens. Teams work in a 3-D virtual onlineenvironment using 21st Century tools to refine designs and to create 3-D modelsof their design solutions.

InWorld Phase begins: January 28, 2012.
InWorld Phase ends: April 20, 2012.

Follow the Desert RATS Team During Analog Testing

The NASA Desert Research and Technology Studies team, also known as Desert RATS, marks its fourteenth annual field test and the first time a mission to an asteroid will be simulated. While NASA has landed astronauts on the moon and rovers on Mars, the agency is only beginning to tackle the challenges of visiting an asteroid. Desert RATS team members will conduct simulated human and robotic space exploration test activities in extreme Arizona terrain to investigate and develop realistic technical and mission-driven operations similar to those of an asteroid mission.

The public is invited to follow along during the simulated mission. The Desert RATS team will use Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Ustream to share their experience online.

Pre-Service Teacher Institutes at NASA’s Stennis Space Center

NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center has partnered with Jackson State University to offer a two-week Pre-Service Teacher Institute taking place July 17-29, 2011, in Jackson, Miss. The application deadline has been extended to July 7, 2011. The Pre-Service Teacher Institute is for college students who are preparing to teach middle school grades.

The program is designed to increase students’ skills in teaching mathematics and science, while incorporating technology in the curriculum. This is achieved through the development of a problem-based learning aerospace theme. Each student is assigned to an Institute Flight Team. Students develop a lesson plan that they will teach to children from a local school.

New Horizons Mission Student Dust Counter Lessons — Grades 8-10

The Student Dust Counter is an instrument aboard the NASA New Horizons mission to Pluto, launched in 2006. As it travels to Pluto and beyond, SDC will provide information on the dust that strikes the spacecraft during its fourteen-year journey across the solar system. These observations will advance our understanding of the origin and evolution of our own solar system, as well as help scientists study planet formation in dust disks around other stars.

Flight Testing Newton’s Laws — Grades 9-12


“Flight Testing Newton’s Laws” uses aircraft to stimulate students’ interest in the physical sciences and mathematics during the course of ten lessons with corresponding videos. The main emphasis lies in showing how Newton’s three Laws of Motion and the four forces of flight apply to flight testing an aircraft. Students solve problems involving kinematics and dynamics. Complementary areas of trigonometry, vector addition, weight and balance, and resolution of forces are employed. The collection includes an educator’s guide that is presented in the format of a flight instructor’s manual to help guide teachers and students through each lesson.

NASA Explorer Schools Live Video Chat: The Reason for the Seasons

NASA Explorer Schools invites students in grades 8-12 from across the U.S. and Departments of Defense and State schools to participate in a special live video webchat with Dr. Timothy Livengood. The topic for the chat is the reason for the seasons, which is especially appropriate since the one-hour video webchat starts at 1 p.m. EDT on June 21, the first day of summer for the northern hemisphere. Livengood will answer student questions about the seasons on Earth and other planets in our solar system.

You do not need to be a participant of the NASA Explorer Schools project to participate in the chat.

Proposal Deadline Approaching: Amateur Radio on the International Space Station Contact Opportunity


NASA is seeking U.S. formal and informal education institutions and organizations, individually or working together, to host an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station, or ARISS, contact between the dates of Jan. 15 and July 15, 2012. To maximize these radio contact opportunities, NASA is looking for organizations that will draw large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a well-developed education plan. The deadline to submit a proposal is July 15, 2011.

During the first six months of 2012, crew members aboard the International Space Station will participate in amateur radio contacts. These radio contacts are approximately 10 minutes in length and allow students and educators to interact with the astronauts through a question-and-answer session. An ARISS contact is a voice-only communication opportunity via amateur radio between astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the space station and classrooms and communities. ARISS contacts afford education audiences the opportunity to learn firsthand from astronauts what it is like to live and work in space. Due to the nature of human spaceflight, organizations must demonstrate the flexibility to accommodate changes in contact dates and times.

NASA Endeavor Science Teaching Certificate Project: K-12 Educator Fellowships

The NASA Endeavor Science Teaching Certificate Project awards one-year fellowships each year to over 40 current and prospective educators. The project is administered by U.S. Satellite Laboratory Inc. Funding authorization for the project is provided through the NASA Endeavor Teacher Fellowship Trust Fund as a tribute to the dedicated crew of the space shuttle Challenger.

In partnership with state departments of education, Endeavor Fellows take five graduate courses in an innovative, online format from the comfort of their homes or schools. In these courses, participants gain science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, professional development. They learn to apply research-based pedagogical strategies and cutting-edge STEM content to their classroom contexts while becoming part of a network of like-minded educators across the nation.

Endeavor Fellows earn and are awarded a NASA Endeavor Certificate in STEM Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Fellows’ Leadership Distinction activities will promote learning outside the classroom walls in the fellows’ states or districts. Fifteen graduate credits are awarded from regionally accredited higher education partners.

New NASA Website Available for Kids

Two award-winning kids websites have join forces to further inspire a new generation of explorers.

NASAScience Kids and SpacePlace have combined to provide several new Web features with interactive graphic designs, in addition to having extensive rich science and technology content of the “old” SpacePlace — with over 50 NASA science missions — and content from NASAScience Kids. These sites offer the best of NASA material for elementary school students.

The site includes over 300 separate modules available in English and Spanish. Modules feature categories related to Space, Earth, Sun, Solar System, People and Technology, Parents and Teachers. Information mirrors the missions of the NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, as well as the agency’s commitment to education and public engagement.

The menus are filterable on subject or type of activity, and searches produce customized menus. Educational and compelling games have been reframed, images and illustrations are enlargeable with a mouse click, and videos run seamlessly within the page. All pages are printer friendly, with a special formatting algorithm that appropriately arranges headings, sidebars, and images.

Summer of Innovation Mini-Grant Opportunity

The NASA Office of Education is pleased to offer Summer of Innovation, or SoI, Mini-Grant opportunities in partnership with the National Space Grant Foundation. The mini-grant aspect of the SoI enables local organizations to infuse NASA-themed science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, content and activities to middle school students through existing summer and/or afterschool programs. NASA looks forward to forging ahead with these important collaborations to engage and inspire students across the country.

Organizations are eligible to apply for up to $2,500 in funding to incorporate SoI content and themes into their programming.

Music and Astronomy Under the Stars

Join Dr. Donald Lubowich, coordinator of the Astronomy Outreach Program at Hofstra University, for a series of events bringing astronomy to the public. Concertgoers at several events this summer will get a glimpse of heavens along with their music.

This NASA-sponsored program will include optical and radio telescope observations of the Sun prior to the concerts. Observations of the moon, planets, multi-colored double stars, star clusters and nebulae will be featured at intermission and after the concerts. Space Shuttle Tire Loan Program

NASA is seeking outside organizations interested in a unique outreach opportunity using main landing gear tires from space shuttle missions. The three-year renewable loan of these tires may be used to educate, inspire or inform the public about NASA’s scientific and technological achievements. These items may not be used for the promotion of any organization or entity, or for commercial purposes.

Tires flown on specific missions or on a certain orbiter may be requested although NASA cannot guarantee that all requests will be fulfilled. Unflown tires are also available.

This opportunity is open to a wide variety of organizations including, but not limited to, museums, schools and civic organizations.

NASA’s Multi-Wavelength Universe Online Professional Development Course

In-service and pre-service teachers of middle- and high-school students are invited to register for an online professional development course sponsored by several NASA missions that are exploring the universe across the electromagnetic spectrum.

The course is offered for academic or continuing education credit through Sonoma State University. At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to use astronomical examples (images, phenomena, telescopes) to describe the nature of light and color in terms of the regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Participants will also be able to explain why NASA uses a variety of telescopes and space-based instruments to make observations of the universe. NASA resources for the classroom will be shared and participants will learn how NASA resources can be used to address common student misconceptions about the nature of light and color.

Formal presentations for the course will take place July 11-22, 2011. Homework for academic credit is due Aug. 23, 2011.

NASA DLN Webcast — Meet NASA Langley’s Center Director: Lesa Roe

Lesa B. Roe is the first female director of NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va. Appointed in 2005, Roe is the only female center director at NASA. Roe is the senior management official, overseeing facilities valued at more than $3.3 billion, and employing over 3,600 engineers and scientists. She is responsible for the center’s technical implementation of aeronautical, space and science programs, as well as the overall management of facilities, personnel and administration.

2011 National Community College Aerospace Scholars Program

National Community College Aerospace Scholars is an interactive, online learning experience featuring engineering career possibilities. It is highlighted by an on-site experience where selected students are encouraged to study math, science, engineering or computer science by interacting with engineers at a NASA center.

The only cost to participants is a $30 registration fee. NASA covers travel, food and lodging. NCAS is open to community college students throughout United States. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and have access to the internet.

National Space Biomedical Research Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The National Space Biomedical Research Institute, or NSBRI, seeks solutions to health concerns facing astronauts on long missions. This research also benefits patients on Earth. The NSBRI is soliciting applications for its Postdoctoral Fellowship Program.

The NSBRI’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program provides support for postdoctoral fellows in any U.S. laboratory carrying out space-related biomedical or biotechnological research. Funding is for a two-year period with an option for a third year of support. Applicants must prepare proposals with the support of a mentor, and all proposals are evaluated by a peer-review panel.

Interested applicants are asked to submit a Notice of Intent by May 18, 2011, but an NOI is not required.

Spiders in Space: Nine Days Before Launch

You and your students can be part of space shuttle Endeavor’s last flight. On April 29, 2011, an orb weaver spider will join the STS-134 crew aboard space shuttle Endeavour for a trip to the International Space Station. Once aboard the space station, the spider will star in an exciting experiment to observe its behaviors in microgravity. The spider will live in a safe environment that provides food and water. Real-time photos and video of the spider will be transmitted from the space station back to Earth and made available for students on the “Spiders in Space” mission page.

Students and teachers worldwide will be able to conduct their own classroom investigations comparing ground-based spiders with those living in microgravity on the space station. NASA DLN Webcast — Meet NASA Langley’s Center Director: Lesa Roe

Lesa B. Roe is the first female director of NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va. Appointed in 2005, Roe is the only female center director at NASA. Roe is the senior management official, overseeing facilities valued at more than $3.3 billion, and employing over 3,600 engineers and scientists. She is responsible for the center’s technical implementation of aeronautical, space and science programs, as well as the overall management of facilities, personnel and administration.

NASA Accepting Proposals for Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences 2011

NASA is accepting proposals for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Research Announcement, or NRA, entitled Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) — 2011.

There are three education opportunities in this ROSES NRA.

The first is the opportunity to conduct midsized education and public outreach projects by participating in Opportunities in Education and Public Outreach for Earth and Space Science. Full proposals are due on May 6, 2011.

The second opportunity is for early career scientists and engineers. Early career scientists and engineers in Earth science may participate in the New Investigator Program in Earth Science. A notice of intent is not requested for this opportunity. Full proposals are due May 27, 2011. Early career scientists and engineers in planetary science may participate in the Fellowships for Early Career Researchers. For this opportunity, a Notice of Intent is requested by June 30, 2011, with full proposals due on Aug. 31, 2011.

The third opportunity is for Principal Investigators, or PIs, of selected research investigations to receive Education or Outreach awards as supplements to their research award. Two different pathways are offered: $15K/year education pathway proposals and $10K/year outreach pathway proposals. The parent research award must have more than 12 months remaining at the time of submission of an education or outreach supplement proposal. Dig in! $5,000 Grants available for 2012 NASA Lunabotics Mining Competition

The NASA Minority Innovation Challenges Institute, or MICI, will be offering minority serving institutions the opportunity to apply for a $5,000 grant to assist their schools in entering the 2012 NASA Lunabotics Mining Competition. Lunabotics is a university-level competition that encourages innovative lunar excavation concepts from universities. These concepts may result in clever ideas and solutions that could be applied to an actual lunar excavation device or payload. The challenge is for students to design and build a remotely controlled or autonomous excavator called a lunabot that can collect and deposit a minimum of 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of lunar simulant within 15 minutes. The competition will occur in the spring of 2012.

Training Workshops for Afterschool Universe Astronomy Program

Afterschool Universe is a hands-on astronomy program targeted at middle school out-of-school-time settings. It explores basic astronomy concepts through hands-on activities and focuses on a journey through the universe beyond the solar system.

A free, 2-day training workshop for U.S. citizens is being held on July 28-29, 2011, at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. This training will prepare participants to lead the program or train others to do so. Most of the materials to run the program are easily available at grocery stores and craft supplies stores. Workshop attendees receive access to a password-protected website that has resources to help with the implementation of the program, including a PDF version of the manual.

NASA Announcement: Seeking Collaborators to Assist NASA in Inspiring a New Generation of Scientists, Engineers, Explorers, Educators and Innovators

The NASA Office of Education requests information from organizations interested in helping the agency achieve its strategic goals for education. NASA’s commitment to science, technology, engineering and mathematics education spans kindergarten through graduate levels and includes informal, public education. NASA education shares the agency’s space-based mission to inspire students of all ages to participate in STEM education. NASA seeks unfunded partnerships with organizations to engage new or broader audiences across a national scale.

Potential partnership activities are varied. NASA is receptive to a wide range of possibilities. All categories of domestic entities, including U.S. federal government agencies, are eligible to respond to this announcement. NASA particularly seeks responses from creative organizations with wide-ranging areas of expertise. NASA will accept responses through Dec. 31, 2011. Review of responses will begin in June 2011.
