Peake and Kopra to Conduct First Spacewalk of the New Year

Astronauts Tim Peake and Tim Kopra are getting ready for a spacewalk next week to replace a failed voltage regulator. The duo are scheduled to work outside for 6.5 hours on Jan. 15 for the replacement work and other tasks.

In preparation, Kopra worked on the U.S. spacesuits today that he and Peake will wear next week. Peake, a British astronaut with the European Space Agency, began collecting and configuring their spacewalk tools.

The Expedition 46 crew also continued more advanced space science research onboard the International Space Station. Commander Scott Kelly joined his fellow One-Year crew member Mikhail Kornienko for the Fluid Shifts study. That experiment explores how microgravity increases brain pressure which pushes back on a crew member’s eyes, resulting in changes to their vision.

Cosmonaut Sergey Volkov studied radiation exposure, how international crews relate during missions and worked on maintenance tasks. His fellow cosmonaut and flight engineer Yuri Malenchenko looked at magnetic fields and coulomb crystals and transferred cargo from the newest Progress 62 cargo craft.

  1. DEAR ASTRONAUTS, I WLL TRY TO IMAGINE HOW WOULD I FILL IN A SPACE WALK, IT SEEMS TO ME , THAT THE MOVEMENT ODF THE BODY IN SPACE SUITS IS SOME LIMITED, COMPARED TO THE SAME ON EARTH AND MORE LIKE FLYING AND SLOW SWIMMING… HOW YOU FILL IN THAT EXPERIANCE?

  2. You guys must be having the ride of your life. You should feel very special. Christmas Eve we stood outside and saw you pass by. My son said “no wonder Santa can deliver so many toys, look how fast he can go”. I said “your right” 😉

  3. Dear Astronauts,

We want to wish you a safe space walk and we hope you return to Earth safely, soon.

  4. I wish you all the crew members a happy journey in space. Iam mad in going to space and I love experiencing space walk by wearing a space suit like. Or you people perform it. I wish, one fine day I ll be their in that same space station and getting ready for my first space walk.great really hats off to all I great minds and brave hearts of the globe….

  5. I am glad Time Peake will get his spacewalk. It has taken incredible determination and focus to reach this goal. I wonder, now that you look down upon this struggling planet whether your thoughts have changed. So many of the problems of this world arise because we live our lives without thinking of the big picture.
I will look up and wish you luck on the 15th.
